You are bigger than...
I watched this with a group of colleagues, and as we lingered in the emotion, we all experienced the power and inspiration contained in these three short minutes.
We each had a slightly different connection to the ad, and it was interesting to talk about how the ad impacted each of us uniquely. As someone who is tempted to see my value through my performance, the words from Wade’s mom had deep meaning. She said:
“I am more proud of the man you have become than the basketball player. You are bigger than basketball.”

Hearing these words made me pause and reflect. What am I bigger than? What am I striving for and how do I know that I’m striving for the right thing? What really matters in the end? What am I bigger than?
Take a few minutes this week to slow down and consider the following questions:
- What are you striving for?
- How do you know you are striving for the right thing?
- If you strive for __________, what will you need to give up?
- Is it worth it?
- What are you bigger than?
Share this video with someone you are close to and discuss the same questions. What new insights do you have?
Jot down a few words that keep coming up for you that define what really matters to you. Come back to them often and make edits as needed.
Identify one or two ways you can get closer to the words you jotted down. Share these with a trusted friend/colleague/coach to hold you accountable.
