Empathy is the ability to recognize and appropriately respond to other's emotions. Often times, focusing on tasks, schedules, To-Do lists, and even the clock, can get in the way of showing empathy towards others. Three things that can help you shift toward empathy include:
• Curiosity to help you understand.
• Respect to help you value.
• Appreciation to help you value.
One of the best assumptions you can make to help you empathize is that the others' feelings are coming from some important need that is not met. Be curious about that. Respect that it's real. And appreciate that the vulnerability that is needed to share that part.
Empathy is about connecting. Don't feel compelled to fix things. In fact a good practice to follow is:
Don't just do something, sit there!
